Need wedding gift ideas

March 19th, 2012 at 04:26 pm

I have a wedding to attend next weekend for the daughter of a friend. I need some inexpensive gift ideas. She already has things needed to set up house and gift cards seem impersonal. Any ideas?

A softcover book on green cleaning "Clean House, Clean Planet" is a fave, a box of baking soda, essential oils of tea tree, eucalyptus, lemon or peppermint, white distilled vinegar, a 32 oz. bottle of Dr. Bronner Sal Suds. Any combination of these I bring for cheap gifts.

I like theme gifts like that when the couple doesn't really need anything. What about a romantic picnic kit? Basket, thin blanket, bottle of wine and glasses, book of poetry, and some nonperishable foods like olives, crackers, etc?

try to shop local biz's or at least Made in USA

How about gardening stuff? Fill a clay pot with gloves, seeds, trowel, etc. I prefer vegetable and natives, not just decorative plants. Include a small manual on the type of gardening you are giving (small container, herb, native plant, butterfly/bird, or whatever). Or just do a ready potted plant such as a small (dwarf) fruit tree. Tie a big bow on it.

Another idea might be a pair of tix to a local show. Wrap creatively with a scarf or hat or pair of gloves for the night out. Our area has a comedy club that you can get vouchers so the recipient can pick the date. Plays are more expensive, but WONDERFUL!! Ditto music concerts, though there is almost SURELY a local (less prestigious) company for dance, music, theater that you can contact.

Avoid Walmart, Target, big box stores. PLEASE!

Is there a zoo nearby? Perhaps a membership to it. Cooking lessons? Dance lessons? A personalized stepping stone for their yard?

    A couples massage...

I made a wreath once for a wedding gift using a water hose as the wreath and attached a variety of gardening items (gloves, seed packets, hand tools, etc) and a couple of silk sunflowers. It turned out really cute.

I'm a hopeless romantic, but something like the things suggested above (massage, basket, etc.) will lead to a very memorable gift, and also offer some insurance of something that they might not purchase for themselves.
